The Online Introductory Modules on International Humanitarian Law are an open access web-based course offering refresher or new material on humanitarian law and policy to professionals from the humanitarian community.
As part of an ongoing research study, Online Introductory Modules on IHL are open to all members of the humanitarian community (free registration required). After viewing a lecture, participants are invited to join the discussion fora to engage with faculty and fellow professionals on current IHL challenges.
Participants attending on-site core advanced trainings are required to complete all four modules, the session quizzes, and the course evaluation prior to attending the respective core sessions. The Online Introductory Modules are self-paced and may be started and finished at the participant's own pace.
The modules on International Humanitarian Law have been developed by the Program on Humanitarian Policy and Conflict Research at Harvard University, as part of its Distance Learning Research Initiative. Participants will be asked to fill short anonymous questionnaires at the end of each session as well as an evaluation form at the end of the course. Participants who complete the Online Course on Humanitarian Law and Policy will receive a letter of completion from the Harvard Program.
Topics currently include:
- Module 1: Introduction to IHL
- Module 2: Distinction between civilians and combatants
- Module 3: Humanitarian protection, and
- Module 4: Interplay between IHL and human rights.
