Core Training, Advanced Training on Humanitarian Action

Härnösand, Sweden, October

Part of the Advanced Training Program on Humanitarian Action, this course is organized by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) in collaboration with HPCR International. The purpose of this workshop is to enhance NGO planning and operational capabilities in humanitarian emergencies. Presented twice a year, this five-day event examines legal, operational and policy aspects of humanitarian action. The legal framework of international humanitarian law, considered in relation to humanitarian and operational tools, serves as a conceptual underpinning for the training. Third Senior Security Management Seminar

Specialized Training on Security Management

Härnösand, Sweden, December

This course is organized by Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) in collaboration with HPCR International. The purpose of the course is to enable capacity building of NGO staff with a view to increase their competency to manage their relations with providers of physical security, as well as to strengthen their overall risk-management policies and practices, in optimal compatibility with their institutional ethics and operational objectives. Specialized Training on International Humanitarian Law

Härnösand, Sweden, December

The purpose of this specialized workshop is to provide an opportunity for participants to acquire and refine the necessary professional skills to address humanitarian challenges through the framework of International humanitarian law. International humanitarian law (IHL) is the body of international law which regulates armed conflict including military occupation. This event will offer operational training and instruction on IHL and particular focus will be put on the role and responsibility of civil society with regard to IHL. Second Senior Security Management Workshop

Geneva, Switzerland, December

This was the second of two senior security management workshops co-organized by the International Association for Humanitarian Policy and Conflict Research (HPCR International) and the Geneva Centre on Security Policy (GCSP), in cooperation with the Program on Humanitarian Policy and Conflict Research. The Senior Security Management Workshop ran from December 5 - 7, 2007, and was held in Geneva, Switzerland. The workshop included senior security managers, academics and policy professionals from a broad range of major United Nations and non-governmental organizations. The purpose of the workshop was to discuss, test and refine advanced themes on security management; identify best practices and methods for delivering security management training; and provide a forum for ongoing discussion of security management issues through the creation of a network of professionals. Protecting Civilians in Air Warfare: Development of a manual on IHL applicable to air and missile warfare

This information session on a project to develop a manual on international humanitarian law in air and missile warfare was hosted as a side event to the 30th International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent. Organized in cooperation with the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs and the Program on Humanitarian Policy and Conflict Research, the session included a presentation on the draft manual and commentary, which aim to restate customary international law governing air and missile warfare. In this session, HPCR welcomed the participation of legal advisors, policymakers, and practitioners for a discussion of the history of the project, its methodology, and the legal themes addressed in the draft manual.

Launch of the Peacebuilding Initiative Portal

New York, July

Hosted by the Permanent Mission of Switzerland to the United Nations, in cooperation with the Peacebuilding Support Office, this information session provided an opportunity for the project team to introduce the methodology guiding the project, elaborate the different resources available on the website, and discuss future potential for information management tools in peacebuilding.
